By Kevin G on March 29, 2014

Interior design is a multifaceted profession that includes the management and execution of the design, conceptual development and communicating with the all parties who are involved with a project. Interior Designers frequently work directly with architectural professionals.

The Interior Design profession is relatively new and it is an art form that evolves constantly. Also it relies on research from many fields of expertise for a designer to have an understanding of how people are influenced by their environments.

Interior design describes a group of varied and related projects that lead to the turning of an interior space into an “effective setting for the range of human activities” that are to take place within this area. An interior designer is a professional who coordinates and manages projects of this nature.

A distinction between the terms decorator and designer can be drawn based upon the educational achievements, the amount of work performed and often interior designers will have professional accreditation.

With regards to the work of an Interior Designer compared to interior decorating more emphasis can be found on effective use of space, planning and functional design. Interior designers undertake projects that include assisting with the layout of spaces within a buildings and understanding of technical issues such as temperature, acoustics and lighting. An interior designer is capable of creating the layout of a space. However, their designs will often require a stamp of approval from an architect.

Interior designers sometimes specialise in a specific type of interior design and develop technical knowledge within this field of expertise. Types of interior design include exhibition design, healthcare design, commercial design, spatial branding, hospitality design, residential design and universal design.
